Happy 100th Birthday Dick Van Dyke

You may recall my movie review of Mary Poppins, which I wrote last year. Then, it was the movie’s 60th anniversary. I also mentioned that 2024 had been rather unkind to the film, considering the deaths of Glynis Johns and the last remaining Sherman brother, and of course, when the BBFC re-analysed” the content.

However, the positive vibes have returned this year. Julie Andrews turned 90, Karen Dotrice, the actress of Jane Banks, hit 70. And today, we have a centurion. I refer to Dick Van Dyke.

For many years, Dick Van Dyke has made an impact to the film industry and film fans alike – including for not only his legendary role as Bert in Mary Poppins, but his comedy show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, his role in Diagnosis Murder, playing a villain in Night At The Museum, and various other roles to name. One role I shall fondly remember him for is as Caractacus Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which is a film I grew up with – I recall being fascinated by the titular car and its unique design and the entertainment I received from the songs. Dick himself is not only a forever awesome actor, but also a marvellous singer. A few years ago, I had met the actors who played the Potts children in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and we conversed about the contact they maintained with Dick and how well they got one with the guy.

It’s very rare for somebody to reach the age of 100. It was indeed a lucky age for Glynis John, and it’s an achievement for Dick as well. Even he faced some bizarre events last year, including surviving a house fire. Very lucky for him.

So happy 100th birthday to Dick Van Dyke. Viva the new centurion and long may he stay fit and well.
